Both the model 47 and 48 chassis were placed in this cabinet. The model 47 chassis is a midget, four tube, A.C. powered TRF chassis. The model 48 chassis is a midget, five tube, A.C. powered TRF chassis. The tubes used in the model 48 chassis are: The tubes used in the model 47 chassis are: This cabinet containing the model 47 chassis was only named the Elf. It was first available in the fall (mid to late November/early December) of 1930. The last Crosley paper I have mentioning the model 47 chassis is mid-January 1931. Crosley replaced the model 47 chassis with the model 48 chassis in January 1931, and renamed it the "Wigit." I think this was because the model 47 chassis was a very poorly performing chassis. Some of the early versions containing the model 48 chassis contained a metal tag in the normal location identifying it as an "Elf." I think this was because Elf tags had already been produced, and Powell wasn't about to waste them. This is why collectors are sometimes confused about whether this cabinet containing the model 48 chassis is an Elf or a Wigit. By the tag it was both, but by design it was only the Wigit. |
